Up for bid is this classic 1986 Dodge D100 Short Bed Pickup Truck. We recently rescued this cool old farm truck from a barn in Northeast Texas where it had been sitting up for over 15 years. With the vehicle being under cover and hidden from a lot of the outside elements, it has been well preserved and in exceptional shape! We were able to film and document a video on our Turnin Rust YouTube channel of what it took to get the truck up and running as well as making a road trip back to the shop with it. I have attached the video below for reference and viewing.
This short bed truck is equipped with the original 318 v8 engine and 3spd automatic transmission. After doing the typical tune up stuff (spark plugs, spark plug wires, oil, distributor, and cap), we were able to get the truck up and running fairly easy. When we found the truck, it appeared the previous owner was in the process of replacing the water pump but the truck had a bad radiator. We have since replaced the radiator as well as some hoses and a couple freeze plugs and everything is working and circulating great with no issues of overheating. Going down the road the truck seems to run good, but if you ease off the pedal and begin to give it gas again it wants to hesitate and cut out a little. I suppose that a carburetor rebuild and fuel filter change could help/ fix that. The transmission seems to shift as it should but I do believe the truck could use some new u-joints or a possible transmission mount as it will clunk/ hit hard when shifting between the gears. When driving down the road, you can tell that the front end could use a little attention with balljoint/ tie rod replacement as it does want to walk a little. We did put brand new tires on the truck before we drove it home. Overall, the engine cranks right up and idles good with no internal noises, it sounds good with its dual exhaust ran out the rear. It does seem like the carb will occasionally decide to flood a little which as stated above, a good carb rebuild or replacement would fix that. I do have the original air breather that goes with the truck that isn’t in the pics. The truck is currently running off the stock tank and mechanical fuel pump. The brakes are in working condition and stopped well for the amount of time we have driven it. You can see the truck running/ driving in the video below.
On the exterior of the truck, we do have a short bed which is highly desired and getting harder to obtain. The sheet metal is extremely solid with no rust through whatsoever that I have seen! The body is really straight and the paint job is fair but very faded. I would assume it is original paint except for possible driver’s fender replacement which has some peeling and a little color difference. The truck comes with this really cool aluminum camper top that is in great shape as well! In the bed of the truck, it has a liner that is in good shape and I believe that both it and the camper top was on this truck most of its life. The glass is all in good shape with the exception of a cracked windshield. Both front and rear bumpers are in good shape and solid. Some handles have been replaced since the video so now both doors open from inside/ outside as they should. Door jambs look great with no rust issues. Overall, the exterior of the truck looks great and is exceptionally good for its age!
The inside of the truck is complete and solid. The dash and gauges are complete and in good shape cosmetically although some of the gauges don’t seem to be currently working. The headlights are not currently working but I do believe the park lights and blinkers are. The seat is worn on the drivers side and will need to be recovered. The door panels are old and faded and the carpet has its share of stains. This is a manual windows/ locks truck.
This is a really cool truck with lots of potential, and although it does run and drive, it is still a project that has set up for 15 years. I have tried to include all that we know on the truck but with that being said, please keep in mind that with something of this age new problems can arise at any time. To have a little better idea of what the truck is, be sure to watch the video on our Turnin Rust YouTube channel with the link below. The truck is being sold as is with clean Tx title.
